Inside Designer Ken Fulk's Magical, Imaginative World

ken fulk design

It’s funny because I’ll sometimes be like, ‘I’m obsessed with this.’ And he’ll be like, ‘Oh, I hate that.’ Or vice versa,” Sndyer says. Sharply dressed designer and event planner Ken Fulk in his new Manhattan loft. To store his extensive wardrobe, Fulk transformed the guest room into a walk-in closet. Instead of hanger rails, his clothes—which are kept in individual monogrammed garment bags—are hung on racks that he converted from British Colonial hospital screens sourced in Mumbai. Vintage retail displays featuring glass-front compartments contain his shoes and stacks of perfectly folded shirts. The 3,200-square-foot house was commissioned by Dr. Cloyce Duncan, a former head of psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco.

Ralph Lauren’s Rules of Living Well

After a devastating wildfire, Ken Fulk uses his design magic to bring a family property back from the ashes. “My sister and I share a brain, and we don’t have to talk through everything,” notes Snyder. “Whereas the difference with a significant other is you’re coming at it from two different places and learning about each other through the process.

Fantastical Homes by AD100 Designer Ken Fulk

“I had never been trained as a designer,” Fulk points out, having instead graduated from the University of Mary Washington with a degree in English and history. “I never wanted anyone to tell me what kind of business I was supposed to have because it might limit me,” he adds. To inject the wonderland feel, they turned to San Francisco design impresario Ken Fulk, the man-about-town whose dapper suits and razzle-dazzle stagecraft have made him a West Coast favorite (just ask Instagram cofounder Kevin Systrom or Fulk’s newest BFF, Gigi Hadid). From flower delivery and party planning to nose-to-tail home design, Fulk’s decor “think tank” does it all. What’s more, he and his staffers do it themselves, designing and creating bespoke curtains, wallpaper, and furnishings for clients.

Gil Schafer on the delicate balance between art and business

Part of the hotel’s charm comes from its eclectic, lived-in feel. Fulk and his team deftly layered elements from different eras and movements, including Art Deco plasterwork, custom surrealist-inspired wallpaper, vintage books and objects and hand-painted murals, “to create the sense of stumbling into a grand old residence,” Fulk says. If you know of Ken Fulk, chances are you know of his dogs, a trio of English cream golden retrievers (better known, perhaps, as #polarbearsofptown) and a wire-haired dachshund, who populate the AD100 interior designer’s Instagram feed. So perhaps it’s not surprising that the story of this house—a newly constructed shingled number on Nantucket—starts with a visit to the vet. A sunny yellow guest bedroom is on offer to friends and family (“I’ve already had the pleasure of staying there,” Fulk reveals.) And the room above the pool house has been clad in reclaimed barnwood and turned into a late afternoon hangout for friends and family. In fact, designed as the only Gifford Nantucket house with a pool, they outfitted the pool house so that friends and family could swing by as they please, whether or not the couple was home.

Modern Life Requires Modern Offices

Event planner, interior designer, and bon vivant Ken Fulk is a master of maneuvering between the various spheres of San Francisco society, from blue bloods to newly minted Silicon Valley tech titans—and beyond. Indeed, the charismatic Fulk is known for bringing diverse groups together and making special things happen. In 2012 he orchestrated a Halloween fundraiser for the Strand Theater that shut down an entire city block for a four-course dinner and a private Stevie Nicks concert. Ken Fulk’s highly sophisticated interiors—often swathed in colorful hand-painted wallpaper and decorated with a mix of centuries-old antiques and custom contemporary pieces—are almost instantly recognizable to anyone with an appreciation for design.

“I’m a storyteller,” says Fulk, who oversees an 85-person team out of offices in San Francisco and New York City (think Andy Warhol’s Factory meets Santa’s workshop). The Silicon Valley town of Woodside, California, is not lacking in unicorns. Nestled in the foothills of the mountains just west of Stanford University, the woodsy enclave is teeming with tech billionaires, including Laurene Powell Jobs, Larry Ellison, and SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son. For 150 years Lake Tahoe has attracted generations of adventurers, artists, and pioneers to its shores—folks drawn to the magnificent rugged landscape of the Sierras and the intense beauty of the crystal-blue alpine lake.

ken fulk design ken fulk design

“The same can be said with period rooms—how boring if we only filled them with priceless antiques.” To the designer, a successful room is “all about this tension between the expected and the moments of surprise.” Here are some of the most fearless ways he has mixed it up. Though it’s infused with a lively and inventive spirit, that’s not to say that Ken Fulk Inc. isn’t very much a business. In recent years, the firm has been exploring taking ownership stakes in its commercial projects (which range from a coffee company to an omakase sushi bar to several hotels). The practice, says Fulk, ensures that both his firm and their clients are completely aligned in their incentives. Room by room, Fulk pictured spaces that provide comfort, provoke conversation, and brook no cliché. “The whole house is a Looney Tunes ode to artisans and artists of all sorts,” he says.

Inspiration at your fingertips

“I had never lived with anyone before, besides my sister,” Snyder says of moving in together in their West Village apartment—which was designed by acclaimed AD100 decorator Ken Fulk. In the hybrid dressing room space, two different vintage wallpapers line the interior. “It feels really feminine and girly, and it’s fun to have a space that’s not so serious,” Sndyer says, speaking of the room. One particularly interesting artwork lives in the downstairs powder room of all places.

Designer Billy Cotton Debuts A Collection With West Elm

It has giant, 400-year-old oak trees, rock-strewn creeks, a big old party barn, and an old rancher’s cottage. Durham Ranch is named after our first golden retriever we got in Boston before moving to San Francisco. With that, we created this habit of naming houses after our dogs. But I can’t afford to name any more houses after dogs because we have too many dogs and not enough money to buy houses to name after them. Over-the-top events aside, Fulk and his team of employees are working hard to keep up with their growing roster of clients, which includes San Francisco’s new private club the Battery, Sonoma winery Three Sticks Wine and a New York restaurant from the team behind Italian hot spot Carbone. In the nearly two decades since the Virginia native settled in San Francisco, his interior-design work gradually morphed into something altogether broader.

The smaller single-story section contains an office and bathroom, while the other features the bedrooms and entertaining spaces, including a dramatic triple-height great room where a 27-foot-tall window frames picturesque views of the city, with the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance. I was always this showman, but there was a piece of me that was not okay with keeping the world at bay. When that changed and I felt like I could be my true self, suddenly my world changed because I felt like I was whole. I could go out, and I could be honest with myself and with the world.

For the interiors, Fulk worked his magic, cultivating a mix of New England antiques, family heirlooms, and Scandinavian design references that gave the house personality and soul. “We were really conscious of it not feeling like a new house,” he explains. And in a house surrounded by water, we wanted everything to have a natural patina.” Vintage and antique furnishings culled from online marketplaces 1stDibs and Chairish as well as L.A. Emporium Obsolete were mixed up with classics from Ralph Lauren Home, Design Within Reach, and RH. Textural wallpapers by Phillip Jeffries and unexpected Farrow & Ball hues—like the deep brown mahogany in the study—made the place cozy, which DeVincent and Gifford planned to use year-round. However, the most constant place in our lives is Durham Ranch in Napa Valley [California].

Take his longtime partnership with nightlife impresario David Grutman. Together, they have created the pastel-infused Swan restaurant, the whimsical Goodtime Hotel, and the recently opened, equally eclectic and singular Casadonna, all in Miami. Within a few months’ time, Kevin invited me up to see a spot he found on the north shore of the lake, just around the bend from where I had vacationed.

In 2011 Fulk learned that Duncan’s widow, Gwendolyn Evans, was considering selling the house and arranged for a walk-through. Intrigued by his initial daytime visit, he requested to return and see it at night, and he found himself sitting in the great room in silence for an hour. "I thought, I am supposed to buy this house." Not that it would be that simple.

If you know of Ken Fulk, chances are, you know of his dogs, a trio of English cream golden retrievers (better known, perhaps, as #polarbearsofptown) and a wirehaired dachshund who populate the AD100 interior designer’s Instagram feed. So perhaps it’s not surprising that the story of this house—a newly-constructed shingled number on Nantucket—starts with a visit to the vet. When Fulk, who has a house in Provincetown, Massachusetts, took the dogs in for a checkup, he never guessed the local P-Town veterinarian, Dr. Stephen DeVincent, would become a future client.

Learn Surface Pattern Design Online

draw pattern design

To doodle, find small objects or patterns that you like, and draw them over and over again. Set 5 will help you get a little crazy and think outside the box. You can doodle a pattern using only a long, swirly line that crosses over itself again and again. Or, you can draw organic shapes of different sizes to create confetti, broken glass, or giraffe spots. Then, as you repeat the pattern, you will find they become cool and complex. You might want to use a compass or traceable object to make perfect circles, or a ruler to make straight lines.

Draw your pattern in a circle

They’re popping up everywhere, from fashion and interior design to art and stationery. Also, you can fill in shapes or forms with patterns, like clouds, trees, abstract shapes, flowers, etc. I believe that any drawing, especially doodles or patterned ones can help you relax. And it’s not just my opinion, therapists often suggest this for anxiety. Here are some ideas on how you can use patterns in your art journal. For example, you can use a simple line pattern, then follow with a circle pattern, and just repeat the process.

How to draw patterns using dots

Use your ruler to ensure that each shape is uniform in size and shape. I find that when I let my creativity run wild that’s when I come up with the best pattern designs. Experiment with different sizes and proportions of your pattern elements. Play with larger or smaller shapes to create a sense of depth within your pattern design. This pattern is inspired by scales that can be found on various animals. We start by drawing a row of arched shapes along the bottom of the block.

How to draw cool patterns in your art journal – fINAL THOUGHTS

Zentangles are meant to free your mind from stress and emotion as you draw. These types of patterns were especially popular during the 1990s. You'll see them in backgrounds of classic cartoons like Rugrats or Rocko's Modern Life, and on merchandise from Taco Bell or The Lion King. Finally, you can use rows of zig-zag lines, solid or dashed, to create a pattern. Perpendicular lines will form a checkerboard or crosshatched pattern. On the bottom row, intersecting lines have been used to create a trippy "X" pattern and the appearance of bricks.

How to draw line patterns

Patterns can be used in all sorts of ways, whether they are for abstract artworks or to be integrated into fabric designs for character drawing. Drawing patterns is the perfect gateway to unleash your creativity. Whether it’s simple geometric shapes, repetitive lines, or playful doodles, these easy patterns to draw offer a stress-free way to dive into the world of drawing. They’re like little artistic adventures that you can embark on anytime or anywhere. So let your imagination guide you as you create cool, easy patterns that will leave you feeling accomplished and inspired.

You can also try to do this pattern in an inverse way if you’d prefer. You can also create smaller spikes within the larger ones and then color in those smaller spikes to create a weird pattern style. You want to keep the lines skew and squiggly with moments of thick areas in each line. You can also draw thin lines in between these thicker lines to create a more interesting aesthetic. We want to make sure the curved areas move away from each other as the vertical and horizontal lines intersect. From there, we can draw thinner and thicker marks over various areas of the lines.

Easy, Simple & Cool Patterns to Draw for Beginners

Nature is always a great source of inspiration, so I tried to come up with some patterns that use leaves and/or flowers. If you wanted, you could make similar patterns with triangles as well. Sure, you can draw squares and rectangles with lines, but I felt like they deserved their individual section.

Identifying & Controlling Ants in Southern California Ant Control Tips

ant house

They are considered agile and also aggressive, even if they don’t sting. Their nests can be identified by seeing multiple small holes in the ground. However, all Western Carpenter ant colonies found in homes are satellite homes. Their main colonies are located outdoors under logs or rotting wood. These main colonies have to be exterminated as well to clear these ants out of the house. With the exception of worker ants, all other ants of the species are nocturnal.

Bed Bug Pest Guide

Ants are social insects that live in large colonies, so what may seem like a small infestation can quickly become a major pest problem for homeowners. If you suspect an ant infestation, don't wait to take action. Infestations of all types of ants will continue to grow without proper treatment. Rather, be sure to contact a licensed pest professional to assist in proper identification and treatment of the species.

Colonies that live on the coast have slightly different habits from inland colonies. Even queens have different sizes when compared to inland and coastal Monomorium ergatogyna colonies. They live in colonies where multiple queens are responsible for leading the pack. These ant species (Tetramorium immigrans) are native to Europe. They have been introduced to North America where they often fight other ant species. This is why reducing interior humidity levels is part of a strategy of dealing with these ants when found inside homes.

The name of the Immigrant Pavement Ants comes from their habitat of living on pavements. They often encounter other ant species on warm pavements during the summer. The ants first start small when building colonies inside of the house. These ants (Camponotus modoc) are also common in California and parts of Western North America. Living in large colonies, the ants are sometimes subject to a single leading queen and other times subject to multiple colony queens.

These types of food include sugary foods such as syrup and honey. Argentine ants (Linepithema humile) come from Argentina. These are common ants in other South American states such as Paraguay and Bolivia as well. AntHouse from Spain are legends at sand and acrylic style nests. Started in 2008 they have been a fundamental part of the ant keeping industry.

It stings people leaving pain, itchiness, and skin redness behind. If most fire ants are interested in seeds, the Southern Fire ant is a bit more opportunistic often consuming honeydew collected by other insects. Attracted to sweet food, these ants are constantly looking for fruits, especially fallen on the ground even if decaying. The species (Tapinoma sessile) is known for nesting on all types of grounds. They prefer to nest in the ground but they are also often found in open soil, woods, or under large objects. All ants leave the nest taking the pathway together.

Many people in the US have been shown to develop allergies to these highly venomous ants. In rare cases, people bitten by these ants can even go into anaphylaxis. If they’re interested in liquid plan food during the day they are scavenging at night. Preferred food sources for these ants are sugars, particularly nectar. These ants have been shown to frequently steal nectar from other insects that collect nectar. These ants (Dorymyrmex bicolor) are very common in the state.

To permanently remove pests, you need to find their colonies and destroy the entire population. That is exactly why you need bed bug inspection, the application of super bed bug treatments, and special pest control solutions. Among the pest control services that homeowners seek, bed bug removal is one of the most sought. One big reason behind this is that the infestation of bed bugs hardly goes away completely through DIY techniques. Once a room has been attacked by bed bugs, the infestation does not stop.

The history of these ants is tied to Baja California. The Chumash people of the region consumed these ants as hallucinogenic food. The ants are known to live in very large colonies preying on raisin moth larvae. These ants are easier to identify compared to Argentine ants given their large size. They made their way to California where they are considered household pests. An exterminator will not only get rid of an infestation but he or she will also recommend several steps to keep roaches out in the future.

Imagine how women and kids might feel when they see it close enough – on the pillow or around the bathtub. Spiders have been one of the most dreaded of all pests. When it comes to spider control, it is important to take action in a timely manner so as to avoid making a minor problem a serious infestation. Sealing all entry points, keeping a tidy home and removing wood piles and debris from the walls of your house or building are some good ways to keep spiders away.

Design-Builders worth their salt have a top-notch quality control team and low callback numbers. Callback numbers show you how often owners request that a builder make fixes after a job’s completion. Another big measure you should consider is the emergency modification rate (EMR). That’s a number universally used as one measure of a builder’s safety standards. An EMR of less than 1.0 indicates that a builder has a strong safety record and translates to low insurance costs that allow a builder to pass savings to you. Another safety measure is a builder’s OSHA DART number, which stands for days away, restricted or transferred.

Preconstruction services can include things like project financing, procurement methods, and performance specifications. The pre-design step defines the project’s parameters and sets it up for success. We created this guide to lay out everything you need to know about design-build, including the steps in the process and the benefits it provides over traditional construction.

What’s Happening at ARCO

Every construction project — whether a small-scale residential renovation or an extensive municipal development — requires a contract. Construction contracts are multifaceted, often comprising numerous documents that cumulatively define the... Kristen Frisa is a freelance writer specializing in finance and construction technology.

Selecting the Design-Build Team

Because the primary focus is price, there is little incentive to truly collaborate with local firms. Once upon a time, design-build was considered an “alternative” way to deliver construction projects. These days, nearly half of all the nation’s projects are delivered using the design-build delivery method. When you partner with Primus, we assume responsibility for the entire design and construction of your project.

Project closeout and post-construction review

And the project team works in fluid collaboration to produce cost estimates at 30%, 60% and 90% design completion. At the conclusion of this process, owners receive a guaranteed maximum price (GMP), a set project schedule and contract drawings — the drawings used to build a facility. That open communication and additional pre-planning also manifests in faster project completion. Unlike design-bid-build, which requires time dedicated to the bidding process, design-build moves straight from the single-contract design phase to the construction phase. With everyone on a single team, the project can move forward quickly without many of the usual snags related to paperwork and contracts.

ProjectSight evolved from Trimble’s Prolog project management software, which was built on a cost and budget module with an emphasis on automating processes, eliminating manual paperwork and enabling one-touch data entry. ProjectSight also includes the Trimble Connect collaboration environment, which enables architects, engineers, contractors and owners to collaborate across their construction projects. With the design-build model, a single company manages all the architectural design, construction contracts, general contractors, and subcontractors. Doing so allows the design-build model to provide design and construction preparations simultaneously and with open communication.

Schedule and Cost Reduction

This approach fosters effective communication, minimizing potential conflicts and delays while maintaining cost efficiency. The original term for this delivery method was master builder, or master mason. They each provided a seamless service that included what we now refer to as design and construction or, more recently, as design-build. Actually design-build is better than design-bid-build at addressing this fear.

Project examples

We thrive with industries well-known for their exacting guidelines and particular building needs. As with any project delivery method, a comprehensive, fair, and unambiguous contract is critical to maintaining relationships and completing a successful project. In preparing to pursue a project, a design-builder needs to build a team that inspires confidence in the owner that all the project needs will be met. The design-builder must foster professional relationships that will help move the project forward. If new to the delivery method, the design-builder should commit to the organizational structure and software that will work for the team to complete the project successfully.

Each step of the design-build process benefits the client, and the design-build process as a whole amplifies those benefits. The design-build process gives you the most agile form of change order management because it can happen in real time while maintaining consistent communication with all parties involved. Post-construction involves the design-build team conducting a post-construction review to ensure the project meets the client’s needs, specifications, and quality standards. This final step assures all the other steps were done correctly and up to the necessary quality. The modern design-build method traces its roots to the United States in the 1950s.
